Buying Steak Online: Cuts, Pack Sizes and Value
Quick answer: Compare the exact steak cut, piece count and weight per piece before comparing price. A package photograph is not a reliable measure of how many dinners a box will provide.
Compare the cut named in the listing
Ribeye, filet mignon, New York strip and sirloin listings are not interchangeable. Start with the cut you want, then check whether it is bone-in or boneless and whether the package contains steaks, burgers or a mixture. A bundle with a familiar steak name can also contain sides or other proteins.
For example, you can open the ribeye filet listing or the New York strip listing and compare the selected package details. These are catalog examples, not a claim that the two packs have the same size or availability.
Read the pack size in two parts
Look for both the number of pieces and the weight of each piece. Four steaks weighing 6 ounces each have a different total weight from four steaks weighing 10 ounces each. In a mixed box, separate the steak count from burgers, chicken, sausages and side dishes.
- How many steaks are included in the selected option?
- Is the listed weight per piece or for the whole pack?
- Does the weight include a bone?
- Are additional items included, or only shown as serving suggestions?
Compare delivered cost rather than discount size
Use total package cost plus the delivery charge to compare similar orders. If you want a price-per-pound comparison, divide that total by the stated net pounds. For a mixed bundle, the result describes the bundle as a whole; it does not show the price of the steaks alone.
A hypothetical $80 box with 4 pounds of food costs $20 per pound before delivery. That calculation is useful only if both listings clearly state their contents and weight.
Plan the meal before choosing a bundle
Write down the number of diners, whether steak is the main dish and what sides you intend to serve. Use the package details to build your plan. Avoid treating a serving suggestion as a guaranteed portion for every household.
Questions about buying steak online
Are all items in a product photo included?
Not necessarily. Use the written package contents and the option selected in the product form. Ask about anything pictured but not listed.
Is a larger steak bundle always better value?
No. Compare similar contents, the delivered total and how much you can use. A larger box is not better value if the extra items do not suit your meals.
